Summer Singer-Songwriter Series With Anneke Dean of Birds of Play

Join Anneke and Telluride Arts for an intimate evening of music at Telluride Arts HQ.

Anneke started playing the violin at the age of 8 where she grew up in Denver, Colorado. From 6th-12th grade, she studied at Denver School of the Arts under the tutelage of the Moscow String Quartet’s first violinist, Eugenia Alikhanova. She holds a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts where she studied with Almita Vamos, MingHuan Xu, and Frank Almond.

Anneke was exclusively playing classical music for the majority of her career until the last two years of her undergraduate. While in Chicago, she started exploring other genres including jazz and mariachi. At that point, she continued broadening her genres and taking any available opportunity to play with musicians. Since moving to the Telluride area in 2018, she has worked with numerous local musicians in the area exploring country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, improvisation, classical, and more.

Anneke met the Birds during the summer of 2020 in Telluride and partook in her first tour with them that September, officially becoming the fourth member and greatly contributing shortly thereafter.

Summer Singer-Songerwriter Series with Covenhoven

Summer Singer-Songerwriter Series with Covenhoven

Covenhoven is internationally recognized indie artist Joel Van Horne, a multi-instrumental singer-songwriter whose rich harmonies, reedy baritone and commanding falsetto have found a home with critics and fans since 2013.  The appearance is in support of his recent album “IV”, which he co-produced with Ben Wysocki of The Fray.  The album features guest musicians Gregory Alan Isakov, and Luke Mossman (Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats), among many others.

More about the artist:

Through 4 full length albums and 2 EPs Covenhoven has forged a signature style; layered acoustic arrangements that roll with momentum into orchestral peaks, accompanied by lyrics that contrast hard-won wisdom with the inherent hope of the natural world—from Big Sur to his native Colorado.  His live performances capture the spirit of his recordings—whether it’s conjuring cascading loops in his solo shows or backed by a full band—Covenhoven’s sound fills the breadth of outdoor spaces, auditoriums and club stages.

Bandwagon magazine writes that on IV, Covenhoven reaches “into chamber pop territory, and revealing a wider vocal range…sheltered by a gorgeous, rich string and piano accompaniment, whisks us above the campfire folk…” and the Boulder Daily Camera writes “From well-crafted ballads that ache with bittersweet nostalgia to love songs lush with metaphor, it’s clear Van Horne doesn’t stray from the rawness of letting his feelings guide his art.  Hard truths, glimmers of hope and questions of faith are cradled by guitar strums, piano chords and powerful melodies.”

Regularly touring the United States, Covenhoven has shared the stage with Grammy winners and nominees S.Carey (Bon Iver), Jose Gonzalez, Gregory Alan Isakov, and John Paul White (Civil Wars).  He has also performed with genre bending artists Leif Vollebekk, Lord Huron, Courtney Marie Andrews, Joshua James, Blind Pilot, Esme Patterson, John Craigie, Elephant Revival, Daniel Rodriguez, Rayland Baxter, Shook Twins, Reed Foehl, Rainbow Girls, Joan Shelley and a host of others.

Summer Singer-Songwriter Series With Gabrielle Louise & Ryan Dilts, and Natalie Spears

Gabrielle Louise & Ryan Dilts

Gabrielle Louise & Ryan Dilts are a pairing of sensitivity and force, performing songs that combine Americana and bluegrass traditions. Gabrielle's emotive vocal delivery and honed songwriting is elevated by the nuance and precision of Ryan's agile guitar work. His flatpicking has a crystalline quality that converses with her voice eloquently, subdividing the time to create layered, rhythmic interest that weaves hypnotic spells. While their material harnesses the authenticity of folk music, it is arranged with a sophistication that aims to honor both of their personal heroes: Joni Mitchell and Tony Rice. After graduating Berklee in 2007, Gabrielle crossed the country many times over in a veggie oil-powered tour van, released nine records of original work, and has been entrusted to open for greats from Joan Osborn to the late Guy Clark.

Natalie Spears

Natalie Spears brings listeners in touch with the warmth of community, the quiet awe of wild places, and the intimate corners of humanity. Inspired by her father's English Folk heritage and talents as a Jazz pianist, Natalie carries a deep love for porch picking music and music that swings. Drawing on these roots and pulling from a quiver of instruments (banjo, bass, piano, and guitar), her sound is both nostalgic and contemporary, sassy and sweet, contemplative and playful. In 2021, Natalie’s duo, Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears, released their debut EP, “Just Over the Ridge,” which reached #10 album of the year on the Folk Alliance International Dj Folk Charts and her song, Seasons Change, reached #4 song of the year.

ARTIST TALK, Tammi Brazee: Tame Your Marmots

Join Tammi Brazee and Telluride Arts for a special Artist Talk and Book Signing!

June, 2023, local artist, Tammi Brazee, will be showcasing her series, Tame Your Marmots, at 224 W Colorado, Telluride Arts HQ West.

While a hint of an accent reveals Maryland roots, Colorado has been Brazee’s home since 2011. Returning to college as a “late-bloomer,” she now holds two graduate degrees, one in environmental science and the other in visual art. This unusual combination of interests has had a profound influence on her work, keeping it suspended somewhere between recognizable reality and imaginary narrative. Brazee tends to investigate the human relationship with the natural world, with its creatures, with others, and with themselves. She makes social commentary with a sprinkling of humor, a nip of nonsense, a dash of self-deprecation, a pinch of bird droppings, and a dose of deeper meaning.

Free Box Party ad Costume Contest!

Free Box Party ad Costume Contest!

October 20th at 5PM, join Telluride Arts, in collaboration with EcoAction Partners and the Town of Telluride, at the Transfer Warehouse for a celebration of the Free Box and the newly installed Free Box truck art-wrap. There will be live music from local band Lavalanche as well as a Free Box Costume Contest! Come dressed in your most extravagant Free Box finds, or try on and take-home new items that will be loaded into the flatbed of the Free Box truck and parked inside the Warehouse walls!

The Telluride Free Box, on the corner of Pine and Main St., is the Town’s center for anonymous gifting. It is a staple in the Telluride community—but the Free Box would not be possible without the Free Box Truck - the wheels behind the operation. Last winter, Telluride Arts organized an open-call to artists to cover the Free Box truck with a mobile, vinyl-wrap installation bringing art to the streets! Andrew Dines’ geometric and colorful design was selected by a committee made up of local artists and town staff.

The idea for this celebration started with the new truck-wrap and grew from there! Serendipitously, EcoAction Partners has been working on developing new textile recycling initiatives with the Free Box. “This event seemed like an obvious collaboration opportunity,” said Austin Halpern, Programs Director at Telluride Arts.

A joint statement from EcoAction Partners says, "We encourage anyone who wants to support textile recycling in our region to attend the event, discuss with us about the various barriers facing this textile recycling initiative, and brainstorm how we can successfully recycle our textiles as a role model for other small mountain communities.”

EcoAction Partners is a sustainability non-profit serving San Miguel and Ouray County. The organization focuses on energy and waste mitigation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The organization has various programs including the Green Business Program, which provides resources on anything from LED upgrades, to financing and implementing building renovations, such as insulation, weatherization, and more.

Stay in the loop with Transfer Warehouse happenings on Instagram and at the Warehouse Events Calendar. STURTZ’S MUSIC STANDS OUT FOR ITS DISTINCTIVE, SOOTHING INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL HARMONIES.

The acoustic quartet – Andrew Sturtz [vocals, guitar], Jim Herlihy [banjo], Courtlyn Carpenter [cello, and Will Kuepper [bass]– falls somewhere at the intersection of folk and soul, with lead singer Andrew Sturtz’s melodic vocals soaring over the lower string instrumentals. Sturtz is based in Boulder, CO, and has toured across the U.S. opening for groups like the Eli Young Band, Trout Steak Revival, Lillie Mae, and Smooth Hound Smith. NPR’s All Songs Considered described the band as “a reassuring breath of fresh air that pulls me back to simpler times” in their April 2020 blog. Sturtz released their debut album You’ve Done this Before in August 2021, and now they are hard at work touring on this album and writing songs for their next album. When they’re not playing music, you’ll probably find them milling flour, farming, laying in a creek, or eating native foliage.
