Gallery 81435 in Telluride, Colorado presents Mircroscapes, an exhibit by Rebecca Rothfus Harrell during the month of June. A reception with the artist will take place Thursday, June 1, from 5 – 8 p.m. as a part of June’s Art Walk.

Rebecca Harrell’s work is rooted in an interest in evolving landscapes, human interventions with the natural world, and geologic formations. She is interested in the contrast between slowly evolving natural forms and rapidly expanding, urban settings. The result is a visual dialog around scale, source imagery and space. Harrell exaggerates that tension through material and formal choices.

Mineral structures are the primary source imagery for her work. When examined closely, they appear to be miniature worlds, microscopic terrains or cities. Harrell is intrigued by the variations in form, color, and complexity that make naturally occurring formations feel as though they are engineered objects, seemingly foreign to the natural world from which they come.

Microscapes is a collection of work from late 2015-2017. Harrell seeks inspiration in landscapes she has encountered during travel and residencies in those years. The most recent pieces (“Range”, “Retain,” and “Elevation”) were completed specifically with Telluride as inspiration. The works “Shift” and “Split” were created in 2016 following travel from West Texas to Colorado with the majority of that time spent in Snowmass and Telluride.

Rebecca Rothfus Harrell is a visual artist living and working in Austin, TX. She earned a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited in a variety of locations including:  Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX; Marfa, TX; Miami, FL; Philadelphia, PA; San Jose, CA; and Austin, TX. She completed a residency at The Banff Center (Alberta, Canada) in 2015 and at the Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT) in 2017.

The show runs thru June 2017 at Gallery 81435, located at 230 S Fir Street in Telluride, Colorado. Open daily from 12-6 pm, or by appointment.
