Project Summary

In collaboration with the Town of Mountain Village and TMVOA, Telluride Arts is seeking proposals from artists for a public art installation in the Mountain Village Center as part of the adapted Telluride Art + Architecture Series. 

Up to ten artists will be selected to have designs reproduced on vinyl wraps for “The Cabins at Mountain Village”, dining pods made from refurbished gondola cabins located in the Mountain Village Center.

A $500 stipend will be awarded for each selected design that can be successfully translated to the three-dimensional vinyl wrap.

Production and application of the finalized wraps will be covered by TMVOA. Artists will work with the wrap company to optimize their designs for print.

The project’s goal is to help brand the Town of Mountain Village as a business and entertainment destination while also enhancing the Town of Mountain Village’s public spaces by adding vibrant works of art to surfaces in high visibility areas.  These pieces of public art will enhance the visual character of our community, promote vitality, and turn ordinary spaces into community landmarks.

Eligibility

• Applicants must live in the U.S.A.

• Artists younger than 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian co-sign the Letter of Understanding detailed below if selected.

Theme

Artists should look for inspiration within the plaza landscape of Mountain Village. Heritage Plaza is the heart of Mountain Village Center. Just steps from the gondola station, celebrating its 25th anniversary as a free public transportation system, and filled with vibrant shops and restaurants, Heritage Plaza offers a flexible space for specific event needs. Artwork should reflect and complement the existing landscape.

Artists selection

As many as 1-10 artists can be selected for this project.  Experience in vinyl wraps or public art is not required. All artists will submit design proposals for initial review and selection, with final approval by the Town of Mountain Village. Once selected, artists will work with TMVOA staff and the vinyl printing company to optimize the design for print.  

Specifications

• Artwork must be submitted as a print-quality JPG(s). Please submit a separate JPG for each design.

• Artwork does not have to be specifically formatted to fit the gondola as part of your submission but should be considered and described.

• Artists will work with the vinyl wrap printer to optimize designs to fit the gondola.

• Artwork will be on the exterior of the gondola car.

• Artwork will mostly wrap around the windows, or be mostly transparent, to retain clear views.

• Compensation is available only after selected artwork has been successfully translated to the wrap print template.

• Artists will be required to sign a Letter of Understanding granting the Town of Mountain Village reproduction rights to the Artwork. 

• The artist will retain the copyright and other intellectual property rights relating to the Artwork but will grant the Town of Mountain Village unlimited, perpetual, and irrevocable right to use or reproduce the Artwork in any non-commercial manner.

• Designs must be unique and the artist submitting the designs must be the creator and owner of the artwork and possess all copyrights and custody of the original work and therefore have not copied, reproduced in any way, or otherwise infringed upon anyone else's intellectual property rights.

Dimensions and locations of gondola cabins

• Gondola measurements PDF.

• The specific location of the gondola cabins will be assigned by the Town of Mountain Village and TMVOA.

• Artists will work with the vinyl wrap printer to optimize designs to fit the gondola.

• Artists must keep in mind that the design must look good on all four sides of the gondola car.

Wrap design guidelines

• Designs must be appropriate for display in public spaces and viewing by a general audience, including families with young children and diverse backgrounds.

• Designs should not aim to blend into the surrounding streetscape but should stand out artistically.

• Designs cannot include political or religious content; any breach of intellectual property; trademarks; images of illegal activity; advertisements; logos; signage; promotion of any business, organization, individual, or product; or involve the attachment of objects to the cabins

• Designs must represent Town of Mountain Village as a business and entertainment destination and unique to the Mountain Village and Telluride area.

• All designs will be subject to review and approval by staff.

• Appropriateness of artwork in scale and imagery.

• Ability to successfully translate original artwork to a digital file for a three-dimensional surface.
