Telluride Theatre’s 34th annual Shakespeare in the Park production is TWELFTH NIGHT, directed by James Cairl. TWELFTH NIGHT is a romantic comedy, and one of the bard’s most beloved plays.
A storm, a shipwreck. Twins Viola & Sebastian separated and both fear the other is gone forever. Viola lands in Illyria, a new place, and dresses as a boy to stay safe. She works for Orsino, whom she falls in love with. But, Orsino is madly in love with Olivia. Orsino sends Viola to court her for him, but Olivia falls for Viola instead. Sebastian arrives at camp, and causes a mistaken identity. He marries Olivia. Viola then reveals she is a girl and marries Orsino.
This summer’s production is set at Camp Illyria, a summer camp in the woods. A fun choice for a fresh take on a classic comedy. Fun for the whole family, suggested ages 12+.
“Melissa Trn (Producing Director) and I just absolutely love this play and were so excited that we could produce it for our community this summer. TWELFTH NIGHT has something for everyone. We chose an edited adaptation, so audiences will have the full experience in a fast paced, hilarious, wonderful evening.” states Sasha Cucciniello, Telluride Theatre’s Artistic Director.
Telluride Theatre is our local theatre company producing year round entertainment, education and enrichment for our community. All of this show's performers, designers and crew are locals (with a visiting guest director from NY) creating much needed community artistic engagement, community building and fun!
Guest Director James Cairl says of working on the show, “TWELFTH NIGHT is a tightrope walk between a romantic comedy and a clown show, as if When Harry Met Sally got mashed up with Dumb and Dumber. The trick, I think, is being able to find the balance between them, when one or the other is playing, and let each story be told.”
This year’s visiting director is from New York, he goes on to say, “This is my first time working with the Telluride Theatre and, walking in, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found is a wonderful company that is willing to take risks and be open to play, working in one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in. Telluride is incredibly fortunate to have this company.”
The show runs Saturday, July 20 through Sunday, July 28 with no show on Thursday, July 25. Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for under 18. Tickets can be purchased online at telluridetheatre.org.
The show will go on rain or shine, as the audience will be covered by the Town Park stage. Please dress warm. Concessions (but no alcohol) will be available to purchase.
