This event features two experts in the art world: Rachel Kaminsky, a New York-based art dealer, and Silvia A. Centeno, a research scientist at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Their presentations will cover areas of art history, connoisseurship, conservation research, and the increasingly important role of scientific analysis in the investigation of works of art. Rachel Kaminsky will recount fascinating tales behind some of the most audacious art forgeries of the 20th and 21st centuries. She will delve into the historical context surrounding these counterfeit works and how the three-pillars of art authentication (connoisseurship, provenance, and scientific analysis) exposed their makers, providing insights that will intrigue art enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. Silvia Centeno will discuss the ever-growing importance of scientific analysis in the realm of art history, conservation, and preservation research. Using examples of paintings in the Met’s collection, she will demonstrate how non-invasive, cutting-edge tools of analysis are able to delve beneath the paint surface to reveal a wealth of valuable and sometimes surprising information unseen by the naked eye.
