FRINGE GALLERY
LOCATION: 307 East Colorado Avenue, Telluride
Fringe Gallery presents a group show featuring paintings by Joseph Toney, alongside selections from Brett Schreckengost, R. Nelson Parrish, and additional Fringe artists.
Joseph Toney’s illustrative painting style, marked by clean lines and transfixing patterns, results in beautiful caricatures of the natural surroundings that inspire it: mountains, animals, clouds, and waves. The work of the 27-year-old artist, who is based in Salt Lake City, has been featured on numerous commercial projects and is held in private collections across North America.
By using mountains as motivation, he is able to create intricately detailed drawings and paintings. Toney’s concentric line-style approach becomes contour studies of the landscapes he plays in.
With a camera in tow, he is able to capture images to take back to his studio for further development. Once there, he creates natural depictions of landscapes and works based off of pure feeling. By using line weight, color and patterns, he allows the viewer to explore the image in up close detail that can then visually build into a full landscape.
Some of the initial execution is done freehand while the bulk of his work is executed through what Toney calls ‘Device Drawing’. Using a combination of rulers, French curves, and a makeshift compass he then translates his experience directly onto wood panels. Oftentimes, he finds his next subject matter while ski touring, biking or hiking.
Join us for the opening of this special installation on March 5th, 5 - 7 pm during Telluride Art Walk.

MILK MOON GALLERY
LOCATION: 307 East Colorado Avenue, Telluride
This March, Milk Moon is pleased to present a duo show featuring painters Rene Gonzalez and Melissa Lakey. By the Light of the Moon is an exploration of emotional landscapes, personal narratives, and relationships, examined through the lens of the natural world.
Born in Montreal and based in London, Rene Gonzalez began painting in Costa Rica’s graffiti art scene, before moving to the UK to study painting at City & Guilds of London Art School. Gonzalez crafts lushly detailed, dreamlike scenes, where a recurring cast of foxes, deer, and other fauna move quietly through dense, moonlit forests. In his bewitching works of magical realism, Gonzalez addresses personal narratives and feelings of otherness, while simultaneously utilizing his thoughtfully constructed visual language to connect to the viewer through universally accessible themes and symbols.
Based in the Mojave Desert near Joshua Tree National park, Melissa Lakey captures the unexpected vibrance of her desert home in whimsical mixed media scenes that exist within the rose-colored liminal spaces between dreams and reality. Infused with luminous optimism, Lakey’s paintings are spaces of joy and possibility, where the warm sun or the blue glow of the moon impart the viewer with a tantalizing sense that anything could happen.

THE BUTCHER & THE BAKER
LOCATION: 201 E Colorado Ave, Telluride
This March, The Butcher and The Baker will feature local photography by Austin Halpern. While Austin frequently carries his photography gear into captivating destinations, he is a firm believer that you can create an equally beautiful image in your backyard as you can on a mountaintop. While Austin loves a classic landscape of a recognizable landmark, he often opts to shoot abstract compositions that depict a feeling of place rather than a direct snapshot of it. Sometimes, this means playing with shutter speeds and capturing the movement of water. Other times this means using long lenses to compress space and fill the frame. He often revisits destinations and believes that the best pictures come with time and knowledge of a place. For Austin, subtle fluctuations in light, the flow of the tide, or changes in the weather can make all the difference in an image.
Austin has loved learning from brilliant artists at Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Maine Media Workshops + College, and Chris Burkard Workshops. His photographs are included in numerous private collections and have been displayed at a variety of galleries and small businesses in Telluride and across the country.
On March 12, be sure to visit Telluride Arts for a Creative Exchange led by Austin titled “Finding Creative Voice: A Conversation About Place, Perspective, and Photography.

Some works express motion through stillness, others through rhythm, gesture, or flow, reminding us that nothing is ever truly static. “In Motion” celebrates creativity as an ongoing state of becoming—where art, like life itself, is always responding, evolving, and in motion.

Wilson paintings evoke the hidden beauty and the transformative power of mountains and winter. My paintings are an interplay of texture, light and shadow of positive and negative space, which conveys the depth beneath the majestic mountains and the serenity of the power that lies beneath. The hidden life and beauty of the magical mountains invites viewers to appreciate both the visible and the concealed aspects of nature.
