1. Updates!

We are ecstatic to report that our Executive Director’s submission of Telluride for the 2008 Governor’s Arts Award won the town an Honorable Mention – the first time in the over 30-year history of the award that a town has been acknowledged as such.  Mayor Fraser and Renee attended the ceremony last Friday, September 26th, in Loveland.

We are very happy to announce that sculptor Amy Jean Boebel of San Francisco, and now of Telluride, joined our board in July.  Also we are pleased to continue Evan Tueller as our Student Representative to the Board.  We also plan to add a “Saturdays at Stronghouse” art program every Saturday for our local youth… see section 5 for more.  TCAH has fostered creativity in Telluride since 1973, and we continue our mission of low, to no-cost programming for local youth and adults alike with these programs!

We are also excited to note the new Art Gallery Liquor License, created by the State and Town, so that our participating ArtWalk galleries can now offer wine during their First Thursday art openings.  Stop by participating galleries to enjoy new art and be part of a new experience in Telluride!

2. Small Grants 2008: Exceptional funding for artists and arts organizations
TCAH continued its successful funding this year to artists and arts and humanities organizations working in San Miguel County.  Due to the generosity of our funding sources, we are able to continue our “Mini” or Small Grants of up to $2,000 in project funding and $500 for education fellowships.  We awarded close to $30,000 in March and September to San Miguel County artists and organizations; and $2,000 to qualified graduating seniors in arts scholarships in May.  In addition to our Stronghouse Mentorship Program, TCAH allocates over $43,000 in grant funding for artists, organizations and youth in Telluride!

We were excited to see our Small Grants and Homegrown Performance Grants being used in 2008 for: CoolSculpt’s annual snow sculpting event in January in Mountain Village, which awarded $2000 in cash and prizes to: the Telluride Academy’s Mudd Butts (Snow Buddha, used for their youth trip to India); Tommy Hein (2d place, King Kong); Mountain School (3d Place, Octopus) and MD Famous Artist (4th Place, Wave rider);  Meredith Nemirov’s artist-in-residency fellowship allowed her the time and support to create new genres in her artwork; Rebecca Pugh/Mountainbirth’s alternate birthing & childcare seminar in Spanish, our most successful humanities project to date, supported by our diverse community and the hospital; Phenomenal Woman’s play “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer” in March at the Palm (bilingual);  Telluride Dance Academy’s 6th annual Spring Recital at the Palm in May, and Valerie Madonia’s “Salon Dance” performance in August at the Loomis’ in Mountain Village.  We also supported four scholarships to Telluride Academy’s Circus Holus Bolus; Thomas White’s piano recital at the Palm in July; Pamela Hancock teaching free “Arts in Nature” lessons with One-to-One kids in the park this summer, with an exhibition in August at the Historical Museum; Mountain Sprouts for three scholarships for low-income families for their June “Theatre Magic” show; and creation of Anton Viditz-Ward’s spinning fire “Wheel of Thwarted Ambition” which will be debuted at Burning Man and in Telluride

This winter, look for: CoolSculpt’s annual snow sculpting event in January in Mountain Village; Jeb Berrier’s annual play in December at the Sheridan Opera House; SquidShow’s performance of “The Maids” in March; ReelThing’s new film “Bag It” about the environmental effects of plastic bags; TCTV’s documentary on the arts in Telluride; Telluride Writer’s Guild’s “Write Here, Write Now”, and the Dance Academy’s annual spring recital.

Student Scholarships were issued to: Devin Erie, Katie Pape, Lane Smith, and Lindsey Cannon, of Telluride.  See Section 8 for more information.

3. Calls for Art
Become a member today and receive Calls for Art, including alerts as to how to participate in the community by donating art and art opportunities.  2008 opportunities included 2008’s CoolSculpt snow sculpting, Chamber Music’s “violins on parade”, TCAH’s annual calendar, and more.  Join as a member artist and enjoy future opportunities for Calls for Art, including one upcoming in the next month.

4.  Art Walk

TCAH was proud to bring the Telluride Art Walk to locals and visitors alike in 2007, and continue its success in 2008.  The Art Walk is a community event in which local studios and galleries agree to stay open “late ‘til 8” the First Thursday of every month (except for off-season).  Stronghouse Studios, Ah-Haa at the Depot, the Telluride Gallery of Fine Art, Lustre, Lucas Gallery, Wilderness Wonders, CoHo, East meets West, MC-Squared, Elinoff & Co., Dolce Gallery, and Lyceum Arts are participating this year, showcasing local art and artists.  We are proud of this wonderful collaborative event and its mission of cultivating a partnership between Telluride businesses and the arts community.  The Art Walk promotes established and emerging artists, local commerce, and public access to the arts.  For more information, visit our website, www.telluridearts.org and click on “Art Walk”.  Check out the March 2008 Plum TV coverage, linked from our website (under About Us/Press).

5.  Stronghouse Studios & Youth Mentorships

Stronghouse Studios has continued its success to date.  Last August found us at full capacity, and we continue our waitlist going forward. Last December, Stronghouse Studios featured Susan McCormick’s vibrant watercolors.  January showcased a group exhibition, and February was a multimedia, multi-artist “World” experience, complete with paintings, art created on site, music and film by resident artists, DJs and filmmakers.  March announced the encaustic (wax) paintings of Sarah “Sequoia” Gordon.  In May and June, we hosted Lloyd Dallett during MountainFilm, and welcomed Meredith Nemirov in July.  Elaine Fischer continued her success in September, and Corinne Creel’s exhibition opened September.  Each artist’s opening reception occurs the First Thursday of the month, from 5-8 p.m. (coinciding with the Art Walk).  Congratulations on your shows, everyone!  Look forward to seeing everyone at the studios in December.

We also are continuing our mentorship program, with Sue Hobby mentoring several students, including Evan Tueller and Sunday DeGraw, in textile construction and design.  We hope to enrich our “Saturdays at Stronghouse” program, with local artists providing free art lessons for children one Saturday per month.  In October, Richard Arnold and Amy Jean Boebel will offer a sculpture class – look in the paper or call us for more information!

Stronghouse Studios is open every Thursday from 12 to 6 p.m., or when the doors are open, so stop by and see what your neighbors and friends are creating!  Stronghouse has over 20 locals participating in an open, loft-like historic setting, and is located at 283 South Fir in Telluride.  For more information about any Stronghouse program, or to join our studio waitlist, please email info@telluridearts.org.

Seminars: We would also like to thank artists Michael McCullough and Meredith Nemirov, as well as Lisa Dawn Gold and Sandy Bassett for their participation in Stronghouse’s artist lecture series in 2008.  Michael’s March lecture, “Bronze Casting” and Meredith’s April lecture “Artist-in-Residency programs” were informative and educational.  Lisa Dawn Gold’s seminar “How I made it as an artist” and Sandy Bassett’s “The Business Side of Art: Marketing yourself as an artist” drew a record number of attendees.  Look forward to more seminars this winter & spring.  If you would like to suggest an artist “How-To” seminar, or teach one, please contact info@telluridearts.org.   Each is free to the public!

6.  Collaboration

One-to-One:  TCAH’s Stronghouse Studios artist cooperative is proud to continue it’s collaboration with One-to-One to provide Artist Mentors to local high school students in 2008, as well as funding Pamela Hancock teaching art to One-to-One kids.

Ah-Haa/Historical Museum: TCAH was also proud to collaborate with Ah-Haa School of Art to paint henna tattoos during their annual fundraiser in July; and provide a darkroom for a children’s photography class in August.  Board Member Susan McCormick participated in Ah-Haa’s and Telluride Museum’s “Why I Came to Telluride” exhibition in February 2008, and small grant recipient Pamela Hancock showcased the OnetoOne children’s art show in August.

CoolSculpt & SquidShow: TCAH is pleased to support the ongoing growth of CoolSculpt, January’s snow sculpting event in Mountain Village during SnowFest, as well as SquidShow Theatre productions, a local performing arts nonprofit, offering performances in alternative venues for little to no cost.  For more info on either of these organizations, email info@telluridearts.org, or visit our website for a calendar of events.

Local Festivals: TCAH and MountainFilm welcomed Lloyd Dallet for the 2008 MountainFIlm Gallery walk.  Chamber Music and TCAH invited artists to paint violins for the “Violins on Parade”, that were auctioned off in August, raising over $6000.   Each December, TCAH helps the Telluride Artisan’s Guild produce their Holiday Bazaar at the Telluride High School, showcasing local artists and artisans.  Board Member and Stronghouse Artist Elaine Fischer, as well as Stronghouse artists Sue Hobby & Luci Reeve, donated several pieces to our own Beaux Arts Ball and the 2008 TAB AIDS Benefit Art Auction.

Galleries & Studios: Additionally, TCAH collaborates with 11 other local galleries to produce the Art Walk, whereby local galleries and studios stay open “late ‘til 8” the first Thursday of every (on-season) month, in an effort to cultivate a partnership between Telluride businesses and the arts community to promote established and emerging artists, local commerce, and public access to the arts.

7.  Desktop Fundraising Calendar

Desktop Calendar Fundraiser: TCAH was pleased with the success of its stand-up, spiral-bound small desktop easel calendar highlighting local artists and their artwork for 2008, and is continuing for 2009.  Each elegant colorful image is of the Telluride region or inspired by the Telluride region, and this calendar tucks nicely into small spaces.  The 2008 calendar highlighted artwork by San Miguel County artists Roger Mason, MD Famous Artist, Susan McCormick, Bruce Gomez, Meredith Nemirov, and more.  This was a great fundraiser for our organization.  Calendars will be on sale after November 5th (or now, for pre-sales!) at:

·                   TCAH (283 S. Fir St),

·                   Between the Covers,

·                   Bootdoctors, and

·                   at the annual TAG Bazaar at the High School, December 5-7.

Members & Support:  Thank you to all who generously donated to the Telluride Council for the Arts and Humanities in 2007 and so far in 2008 for your amazing support.  We would especially like to thank all of our silent auction donors and volunteers for Beaux Arts 2008, our in-kind supporters and our generous benefactors.  All of the money raised supported TCAH programs, including the Small Grants and Artist Fellowship Program, the Stronghouse Studios artist cooperative, and the Telluride Art Walk.  Our non-profit organization has one of the lowest percentages in Telluride of administrative and fundraising costs (28%).  Fully 72% of the funds raised goes towards programming!  Please see the last page for a list of our donors. We would not exist without the generosity of our local governments, foundations, corporations, individuals, and all of our members like you.  Thanks for a great 2008 so far!  If you are interested in still donating, we now are pleased to offer on-line donations, quick & easy, on our website, www.telluridearts.org.
